FIRST Team 5102’s goal is to reach out to the Santa Maria Valley community and offer at-risk youth the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of STEM education. We emphasize hands on education in prototyping, CAD, machining, welding, 3D printing, powder coating, wiring and programming. We seek to enrich our community at the high school level through FRC and believe that anybody, no matter their income or background, can succeed in the field of engineering if they are willing to put in the work and apply themselves. Our program has given them skills which will aid them after they graduate, inspire them to pursue a higher education and allow them to prosper in any field that requires teamwork and cooperation.
FIRST Team 5102 was started by 6 high school seniors, and 2 alumni 1 year ago. We all came from FIRST Team 3512 and started this team to spread FIRST to other high school students in our community, specifically focusing on at risk youth.
Team 5102 operates through the Santa Maria Police Activities League, which is a program under P.L.A.Y, a registered 501.c.3 non-profit organization, which is entirely supported by donations from companies and individuals in our community.
This year, community donations helped us continue building our workshop at 2320 Thompson Way. We were able to purchase a CNC machine and other tools necessary to build and field our second robot. This year we are planning to compete in two regional competitions.
Our team has developed greatly over this past year and we are now host to 3 freshman, 9 juniors and 2 seniors. We reach a wide range of young adults from four different high schools; all students with big dreams.
